Calcium antagonists are one of the effective drugs for the treatment of arterial hypertension (AH). How effective and safe new-generation drugs are to treat AH, in elderly patients in particular, has been demonstrated in the ELLE study covering 324 patients over 60 years of age. The patients were randomized into 3 groups receiving lercanidipine, lacidipine, or nifedipine GITS. The treatment lasted 24 weeks and, if the antihypertensive effect was ineffective following 2 weeks, the doses of the drugs were doubled. At the end of the treatment, all the groups showed a significant blood pressure (BP) reduction as compared to the baseline values. The rate of adverse reaction was lowest in the lercanidipine (19,4%) versus nifedipine and lacidipine (28,4 and 27,1%, respectively) groups. The findings show that lercanidipine lowers BP more effectively than nifedipine in elderly patients with AH, by having a good safety profile at the same time.
