The high prevalence of respiratory diseases in pediatric practice is currently updating issues of effective and safe therapy. Inhalation route of administration is preferred in pediatric practice, because it allows for high-dose and combination therapy for most acute and chronic diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract. A wide variety of different inhaled drug delivery devices makes it difficult for the practitioner to administer inhalation therapy to a child. The widespread use of inhalation therapy requires a specialist knowledge not only of pharmacology, but also the technical characteristics of various devices. This article discusses the main and most frequently used devices designed for inhalation therapy, their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of use in pediatric practice.
