Manifestations of gastro-esophageal reflux disease may not be limited to the gastrointestinal tract. Extra-esophageal symptoms, in particular those associated with the upper and lower respiratory tract, may predominate in clinical manifestations of the disease. Gastro-esophageal reflux can be a major cause of respiratory symptoms, such as chronic cough as well as it can aggravate a course of respiratory diseases which have already established.
The article provides current literature on a pathogenesis of respiratory symptoms of GERD, their clinical course, issues of diagnosis and treatment.
Key words: gastro-esophageal reflux disease, bronchial asthma, chronic cough.
